Abdul Rasul, 35, had been married to a woman who is now a Russian spy, he said. "We're getting to the bottom of it," New York Police Commissioner James O'Neill told reporters after the man's wife, Tatiana, spoke to the media, saying Rasul's arrest showed that the FBI was serious about finding the man. O'Neill said that Rasul, who was stopped and searched by authorities on Tuesday, was wearing a "visually distinctive" headband to cover his face. "It was our best effort to try and disguise the individual to see if we could stop him from getting to a place that was high profile and dangerous," the commissioner said. He would not say where the man had been taken, though he said he was expected to return home to Russia. Rasul told Reuters in a phone interview that he was a member of the extremist Islamic State group, and that the New York arrest was a desperate attempt by authorities to keep him from going to Syria to fight. The commissioner said the headband had been described to him by a source as a common head gear worn by soldiers. "The Bureau is committed to investigating and prosecuting all individuals, and protecting the integrity of our investigations, which include protecting the innocent," an FBI spokesman said. Tatiana Rasul told reporters that her husband had been working undercover with the FBI for about two years, though he did not elaborate on why he was in New York, saying only that he had been in touch with his wife for months.
